# How to Remember to Drink Water (Without Being Nagged All Day)

October 14, 2026 · House Rhymaun

General information, not medical advice. If you have fluid restrictions or a health condition, follow your clinician.

You meant to drink more water today. Then there was a meeting, a school pickup, a call that ran long, and suddenly it's 4 p.m. and your bottle is still full.

Forgetting to drink water isn't a willpower problem. It's a **cue** problem. Here are nine small tricks that make it automatic.

## First: how much water do you actually need?

There's no single number. Mayo Clinic notes that needs depend on your health, age, activity, climate, and more. It says some studies suggest the average healthy adult gets enough by taking in about **11.5 cups (2.7 L) to 15.5 cups (3.7 L) of total fluid a day**, from _all_ sources, and that **food provides about 20%** of daily water. Tea, coffee, and milk count too. [Mayo Clinic, “Water: How much should you drink every day?”](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256) , updated January 21, 2026.

Mayo Clinic also lists simple signs you're likely drinking enough: you **don't often feel thirsty** and your urine is **colorless or light yellow**. Your healthcare professional can help you set the right goal. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can mean you need more fluids. If a newborn is part of that season, [Nestling Care](https://rhymaun.com/apps/nestling-care) is a calm on-device log for feeds, sleep, and diapers — a care log, not medical advice.

## 9 ways to remember to drink water

### 1\. Stack it onto something you already do

Habit stacking ties a new action to an existing one: "After I pour my coffee, I drink a glass of water." Good anchors are waking up, each meal, sitting down at your desk, and the school run. Mayo Clinic suggests drinking with each meal and between meals.

### 2\. Make the bottle impossible to miss

Out of sight, out of mind. Keep a bottle on your desk, in the car cupholder, and next to the couch. A bottle you like is one you'll pick up.

### 3\. Measure in "refills", not ounces

"Two refills before lunch" is easier to track in your head than "48 ounces."

### 4\. Drink before you leave anywhere

Before every door, take a few sips. That alone adds several drinks a day.

### 5\. Use a reminder you'll actually tolerate

Hourly buzzing gets turned off by Wednesday. Choose a few reminders at times you tend to forget, such as mid-morning, after lunch, and late afternoon.

### 6\. Log it with one tap

Logging isn't about perfect data. It's a tiny moment of noticing. A widget on your Home Screen makes it nearly effortless.

### 7\. Make it a little fun

Streaks, a progress ring, or a small companion that cheers you on turn a chore into a check-in. (This is the whole idea behind Thirsty Day; more below.)

### 8\. Eat your water too

Mayo Clinic notes many fruits and vegetables are almost 100% water by weight, including watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cabbage, and squash.

### 9\. Adjust for hot days and workouts

Sweat means you need more. Mayo Clinic says to drink before, during, and after exercise, and more in hot or humid weather. (Hello from Florida.)

## Frequently asked questions

Does coffee count toward my water intake?

Mayo Clinic says tea, coffee, and milk help keep you hydrated and count toward your daily fluid.

Can you drink too much water?

It's rare for healthy adults, but it can happen (hyponatremia), mostly with some athletes. See Mayo Clinic's guidance and talk with your clinician if you have a fluid restriction.

What's the best way to remember to drink water with ADHD?

Many people find external cues help most: a bottle you can see, a habit stacked onto something you already do, and one-tap logging with a small reward such as a streak or companion. That is anecdotal experience, not clinical advice.

## Try it on your iPhone

Free everyday tracking, no ads, and no subscription. Optional companions and Thirsty Pro are separate one-time purchases.
